Film Diversification – How much variance does each filmmaker have with their filmography?.

The benchmark this go around involves the following: Both are now into their late careers and still turning out great films – The Martian (2015) by Scott and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) by Scorsese.

Scott really made his mark with Alien (1979) and Scorsese with Mean Streets (1973) and Taxi Driver (1976). Both of these directors are highly accomplished and each is more known for their contributions to some of the best films of all time.

I know that I usually do a movie versus a movie but felt compelled to pit Scorsese against Sir Ridley Scott (he’s a knight ya know!). We need a better system in place to determine whether or not we should shell out $10 and make a night out of it in the theaters. I believe we sometimes come to too quick of judgments about the things we consume, including movies. In summary, we live in an era with everything at our fingertips. After all, there has been a lot of anticipation with the film.

Make no mistake the movie is making a lot of money right now despite reviews. If you look at the difference at critic’s reviews for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and its users reviews you have this: Critic’s reviews: 29% and User’s reviews: 72%. Sometimes word of mouth or aggregator review websites will determine a film’s box office success or there is a big disparity between critic and user reviews. Better yet, they should have movies that are broken up by genre and have those that tend to favor particular types of movies to give their ‘critique’. Everyone would make more informed decisions on movies. This would create a category for an average ‘grade’ along with those that found the movie favorable. Moreover, Rotten Tomatoes (which was created in 1998 and is now owned by Warner Bros.) would benefit with a sub-set of data that would have critics submit every review with a letter grade. Nevertheless, it is grouped with the other positive reviews. For example, a critic may think that “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” is a good film filled with over the top performances but this is given a ‘fresh’ rating without any consideration for any of the negative elements. When you have every critic seeing a movie they would not normally go out of their way to view, you have a certain amount of bias entering the picture.Īnother thing to also consider is that just because a review is deemed ‘positive’ doesn’t necessarily determine ‘how positive’. The problem with this is that some films are aimed at a niche market that they should come with the understanding that most will not like it altogether. This person may be questioning whether he should waste his time when the perceived chances of him likely the film are at 65%. Take for example a horror film buff that wants to check out the movie “Mama” but only sees the film was ‘approved’ by 65% of the critics.

The benefits of aggregator sites, like Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Critic, are easily realized however that is not to say that it doesn’t come with its downfalls. ‘We’ are at a point where many will decide whether they’ll go to the theaters to check out a film simply based on how high a film scored on the tomato-meter. The website, Rotten Tomatoes, is now a benchmark that is even used with other websites in determining a film’s quality. It’ll help ‘guide’ you with an aggregate score of critic and (more recently) user reviews. The ubiquitous fresh or rotten ‘tomato’ is now a huge part of our society. Whenever you research a movie on the net, you’ll likely see it.
